Setting up the Panasonic MN88473 of an Astrometa USB stick for DVB-C under Linux
Introduction
My Astrometa USB stick is the 2014 revision with “DVB-T/T2/C+FM+DAB” text on the stick and it supports DVB-C, DVB-T and DVB-T2. It came with some additional hardware (e.g. antenna and remote control) as shown in the following picture.

The components of the Astrometa device are shown in the following table:

Once the USB stick is plugged into the computer, the device identifies as a “HanfTek Astrometa DVB-T/T2/C FM & DAB receiver [RTL2832P]” under Linux kernel 6.8. This can be seen in the output from the lsusb command below.

The device has two frontends due to the Realtek RTL2832 chip and the Panasonic MN88473 chip. Therefore you may need to select the correct chip depending on the task.
The names of the frontends are available under /dev/dvb/:

Scanning frequencies with w_scan program
The command line utility w_scan is used to perform frequency scans for DVB transmissions.
The output of the w_scan command only detects two DVB-T devices on the Astrometa USB stick, both frontends are detected as “TERRESTRIAL” by default.

However, the latter one (Panasonic MN88473) also supports DVB-C (as well as DVB-T2), so let’s force the use of DVB-C with the command w_scan -fc -cDE.

Nothing to scan!!
Now it uses “CABLE” for the adapter frontend but it still doesn’t find any frequencies/transponders. Checking the dmesg output provides the answer:

It doesn’t find the firmware file that is required to use the DVB-C frontend of the Astrometa USB stick. The proprietary firmware for the Panasonic MN88473 is missing. The (proprietary) firmware doesn’t ship with the default kernel from Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS (Noble Numbat) but it provides a Linux kernel object that allows to load the Panasonic MN88473 driver at runtime.

Installing the missing firmware
The firmware file needs to be placed into the folder /lib/firmware of the Linux system partition. Run the following commands to change the directory and to download1 the required firmware file.

sudo wget https://github.com/OpenELEC/dvb-firmware/raw/refs/heads/master/firmware/dvb-demod-mn88473-01.fw
Now re-insert the USB device and/or reboot the system.
Scanning frequencies with w_scan program and the available firmware file
After running w_scan again all DVB-C programs are found as expected:
